ODAE: Optical Device for Absolute Encoder,
The design and the realisation of a photodiode array to be used for decoding the code wheel of an 13 bits absolute rotary encoder is reported. ODAE, contains two photodiode arrays placed orthogonal to each other, readout and control electronics as well as a serial interface for calibration. light generated by a high performance optical emitter pass through a glass wheel on which the digital code, representing the position, is impressed. ODAE is placed beyond the wheel and converts the dark and bright pattern into a digital output. The chip has been fabricated in a 1.2um CMOS process and measured 9170um x 3440um,

A Survey on Automatic Indexing of Audio - Video Data,
Today considerable amount of audio-video data in multimedia databases requires sophisticated indices for its effective use. Manual indexing is the more effective method to do this, but it is also the slowest and the more expensive. Automated methods have then to be developed. This paper surveys several approaches and algorithms that have been recently proposed to help in automatically structuring audio-visual data, both for annotation and access,

Password Swordsfish: Verbal Humour in the Interface,
Humour will be a necessity in future interfaces, especially in the area at the cross-roads of entertainment and education, the so called ‘edutainment’. Some consideration on the state of the art in natural language processing and on computational humour prospects are presented, as well as some ideas for the introduction of certain types of computational humour in seductive interfaces. In doing that, reference is made to some of the sparkling exchanges of the Marx Brothers,
